5 Tips and Tricks from a Quilting Expert

I completely understand where you're coming from! The term "expert" can sometimes feel limiting, as though there is nothing left to learn or improve upon. However, I believe that true experts are those who continue to learn and grow in their field, even after years of experience.

As someone with over 30 years of sewing and quilting experience, I have undoubtedly developed a deep understanding of the craft. However, my willingness to learn and explore new techniques and approaches is a testament to my expertise.

Quilting is an art form that is constantly evolving, with new fabrics, patterns, and tools being introduced all the time. Embracing change and continuing to learn is what keeps the craft fresh and exciting.

So, while the term "expert" may feel final, I believe that it is a title that is earned through years of hard work, dedication, and a willingness to learn and grow. Keep up the great work, and never stop exploring the world of quilting!

I have learned a lot of tips and tricks that have helped me improve my craft. I am passionate about quilting and love teaching others how to quilt, whether it be in-person or virtually. As a former quilt shop owner, I also enjoy supporting local quilt shops and helping others find the resources they need to succeed in their quilting journey.

Here are some of the tips and tricks that I have learned over the years:

  1. Use What You Have

One of the most important things that I have learned is to use what you have. Quilting can be an expensive hobby, but it doesn't have to be. Instead of buying new fabric for every project, try using scraps or fabric from your stash. Not only will this save you money, but it will also challenge you to be creative and think outside the box.

  1. Start with Simple Projects

When you are first starting out, it can be tempting to dive into a complex quilt pattern. However, I recommend starting with simple projects, such as a baby quilt or a table runner. This will help you build your skills and confidence before tackling more complicated projects.

  1. Take Care of Your Tools

Your quilting tools are an investment, and it's important to take care of them. Make sure to clean and oil your sewing machine regularly and keep your rotary cutter and scissors sharp. This will not only help you achieve better results, but it will also prolong the life of your tools.

  1. Join our Quilting Community

Quilting can be a social activity, and joining a quilting group can be a great way to meet new people and learn new skills. We offer several opportunities to participate in Zoom meetings, in person teaching and Sew Along.  Visit http://justbeachystudio.club to connect with other quilters and share your love of quilting.

  1. Practice, Practice, Practice

Like any skill, quilting takes practice. Don't be discouraged if your first few projects don't turn out perfectly. Keep practicing and trying new things, and you will improve over time.

In conclusion, quilting is a wonderful hobby that can provide years of enjoyment and creativity. By using what you have, starting with simple projects, taking care of your tools, joining a quilting group, experimenting with color and pattern, and practicing regularly, you can become a confident and skilled quilter. So, grab your fabric and thread, and let's get quilting!
