Who's Your Quilt Idol?

Now, I know what you're thinking. The Bible tells us to have no idols before God, so perhaps "quilt idol" isn't quite the right phrase. Maybe "quilt inspiration" or "creative influence" is a better way to describe it.

For me, that person is Tula Pink.

I've been following Tula's work for years. I've collected something from nearly every one of her 50 fabric lines and have sewn at least one project from each collection. In fact, one of my goals this year has been to shop my own Tula stash instead of buying fabric for new projects. The only exception? New Tula releases. Those are still allowed!

So far, I've stayed true to that goal. Every class sample I've made and taught this year has come from my Tula collection.

Why do I admire her so much?

Of course, her artwork is incredible. Her use of color is completely my jam. Bright, bold, whimsical, and unapologetically unique. But it's more than the fabric.

I've now had the opportunity to meet Tula four times in person. One of the most memorable experiences was attending a business lecture with her and a group of shop owners. Listening to her talk about the business side of her company, her design process, and how she approaches the industry was incredibly impressive.

She isn't just an amazing artist. She's built a remarkable business while staying true to her creative vision.

Recently, at H+H Americas, I had a few more opportunities to see and chat with her in passing. And yes... she complimented my Leader of the Pack project.

Not going to lie—that was a total fangirl moment.

But when I really think about it, I don't idolize Tula. I respect her. I admire her. I appreciate the influence she's had on my quilting journey and the confidence she's given so many of us to embrace color, creativity, and individuality.

She's been an inspiration, not because I want to be her, but because she reminds me to be more fully myself.

So now I'm curious...

Who inspires you?

Is there a quilter, artist, designer, teacher, or maker whose work makes you want to create? Someone whose style speaks to you or whose journey motivates you?

I actually have several artists and designers whose work I've collected and admired over the years. As we continue walking this beach together, I'll share more of their stories and how they've influenced my own creative path.
